You are both missing the target. It's far too complex to fully elaborate on here, but suffice it to say that Europe has broken an iron triangle of choices, which not only limits the number of concurrent choices possible, but also require a minimum of choices to be sustainable.

What is ironic about that? There is nothing ironic about that. That's just you inverting and making stuff up out of narcissistic tendencies to deflect from the uncomfortable truth.

One person affecting the life of another out of selfish disregard is very much narcissistic, especially when it is an imposed and mandatory requirement that one is unable to affect. Me calling it out is what makes narcissists so activated and animated about it; and trying to deploy their typical deflection, inversion, distraction tactics.

How about this, if a bureaucrat's vacation plans are not covered by someone else that can perform their kafkaesque duties, then it means automatic action in favor of the citizen trying to follow the sadistic rules.

But that will also not be satisfactory to narcissists because it means they lose control and power over others. What do you think that feeling is that you are feeling on reading my proposal? There should be no risk in it since the system should/would simply make sure that there is always adequate competent coverage and some bureaucratic slave manager can whip the subordinate serf into compliance with whatever sadistic rules and processes that were put in place. But that too will cause narcissists to twitch because that means they will be accountable and have to be competent.

I think the weird take is to assume it could have been otherwise when almost all the work was ad funded. It's not a coincidence it was Google and Facebook doing the research, IMO. Universities did a bit but like usual with academia the moment it benefited from large scale engineering to make progress they lost out to commercial labs.

My point is that the responsibility of the employer towards the employee (to allow time for vacation) has priority over the responsibilities of the employee towards the customer. It’s not the employee that failed you, it’s the employer. The employee cannot stay at work and the employer is responsible for providing replacement.

Still, why not switch companies to non eu ones?

Wait I'm Belgian and it is basically unheard of that a company cannot answer a customer's message for a month. If it is a small company, then the owner will answer. If it is bigger, holidays will be planned so that no interruption will occur. Companies can close completely for a week, usually between Christmas and New Year. That's all.

And its the same in my experience in France. Companies want to survive.

But I stand by my ( bad ) joke on our ( beloved ) German neighbors!

As a software engineer that has worked in multiple German companies I can tell you that it’s not the case, or at least in Germany. If you do an amazing job, they would praise you and give you a promotion with 2% salary increase and more work. To add salt to the I wound, your colleague that has been on paternity leave for 3 months and on sick leave for 4 months would get the same salary increase

I use Claude with Kiro at work and at home Mistral stuff with pro subscription for coding and research. I don't see a fundamental difference between them in results, at least with what I use them for. The cost is lower too, but it is not the only reason why I won't use Claude at home.

Vibe (the CLI Kiro-like tool) feels more "Claude-ish" as it has more terse answers, while the Le Chat can get quite chatty if you really push it ( * ). Prompting it right gets Le Chat more focused and back to being terse.

( * ) Le Chat is by default in "Fast" mode. It also has "Think" and "Research", but I've not felt the need to use those yet.

As a practical example:

I'm doing some on-and-off family research when I can and have some time since it's the rabbit-holest of all rabbit-holes.

I already knew the answers, but decided to test how well Le Chat does. I fed a 208 year old church book page to Le Chat and asked if it can read that handwritten old cursive Swedish and tell me the contents. Le Chat had a look and then explained it could not, but it pointed me to something I had completely missed before, despite having looked for it: The Swedish Lion OCR model by Riksarkivet (Swedish National Archives) which is purpose-built for OCRing such records (the tool by READ-COOP including The Swedish Lion is at http://www.transkribus.org/).

Then, Transkribus confirmed my existing information and confirmed that I can kind of sort of read that cursive too. I did not expect any new findings here, just to verify against known facts and things were OK. The tip to Transkribus was very nice and I'll be using that tool more.

After this, I asked if Le Chat could dig up some more information about the person (it's a Swedish-Russian noble family connection so a lot of written material exists). Le Chat went about it, summarized real web pages, and the information matched with what I knew already, which was good, no hallucinations or such. I prompted Le Chat further towards the parents and grandparents and so on, it kept on replying with factual summaries and references to web pages that actually exist.

This was all in all very good. For what I earlier spent perhaps a weekend or two (taking like two weeks of wall clock time) in total, I could dig up basically the same information, with sources referenced, in a fraction of the time. Even if Le Chat could not read the page, it pointed to Transkribus and that was very helpful.

The point is: Mistral performs well for me and I see no reason to use something else. There's also the option to turn off the "use my inputs to learn the model". I don't know if Claude has it or not.

Duh, I work in tech in Europe myself. Look at the stock market, look at exit returns, look at employment rates, look at salaries, look at dividends, look at the number of startups. EU tech sector sucks compared with the US. It's not even close in terms of economical breadth, depth of integration, speed, size, capex, value created domestically and/or abroad, and overall trajectory.
