The mods of LegalAdviceUK are pretty strict about keeping the discussion to only actual legal advice, rather than moral or other topics.

The now-deleted post was supposedly asking for legal advice to get their account open again.

It’s interesting to see how many HN comments it spawned believing the story, even after others pointed out all of the problems with it and signs that it was fiction.

This was posted a UK subreddit. The UK police intervene for even small possible internet offenses.

There was a story last year where someone was arrested because they posted a photo of them doing some fully legal shotgun shooting while on vacation out of the countr: https://www.lbc.co.uk/article/consultant-arrested-linkedin-s...

If I was referred to law enforcement for any internet related offense in the UK, especially child abuse and CSAM, I wouldn’t brush it off as no big deal.

Most people who use Google services don't know about this or simply do not have bare minimum technical knowledge required to set this up or even know why they would need to do backups

It doesn't require any technical expertise to set up--you click a button--unless you want to import into something else. I agree it should be more advertised, but I don't see how an open source tool would require less technical knowledge or be better known.

You only read reports about the things they do investigate, not the things they don't. There were probably myriad videos of shotgun usage posted last year, but only one arrest. The same would apply to almost any internet crime.

You would, like the OP, wait for them to show up at your door and attempt to explain it away then. Especially if it was, in fact, no big deal.

At some point we're going to see the real solution is to burn all this to the ground. I know, I know, hyperbole, etc.

We cannot continue to allow the worst among us -- those who by definition want more than everyone else and can seemingly never be satified -- to run the entire world. A lack of morality is what gets you to the top. We must end this for the good of us all.

Again, why not? Do you not want the results to have less seo garbage? Or not have AI hallucinate in your face blocking useful results? I don't get it. I mean, I understand that you don't have recourse now, but I don't understand not needing one given how important search is

When you get bad results from a search engine, you refine the query. Maybe try a different search engine! You have options. When it's your personal email address you don't have options. You are at the mercy of said email provider. You can run that email yourself, sure, but that isn't for everyone. Does that explain the difference?

It's pretty straightforward to sync the contacts on the phone with the contacts on Fastmail via CardDAV, using DAVx5 for example.

I've been using fastmail for over a decade. davx is fragile. Many phone brands (all the OnePlus for example) interact poorly with it. I regularly have to trigger syncs by hand.

Still better than google, but the story here is not great.

Remember EU classified some companies as gatekeepers. Call them gatekeepers, monopolies, whatever - some companies are like "essential workers". They need to be available as much as essential workers were needed during covid. There's not enough computer literacy among population and this 'gatekeeper' role is made up. I also have a Google account which was my main and only one for a very long time (starting from when the Gmail accounts were invite-only and were actually considered really cool) but over time I have come up with Plan A, Plan B and Plan C (which is where Google has been relegated to). I couldn't care less if my Google account somehow got locked. Comparing a service which has countless alternatives to essential workers is meaningless.
