This is very silly. The world has solved this and it’s markets. Before, mindlessly ambition people would take over countries and start wars.

Sure glad markets solved that and we no longer have ambitious people in charge of countries starting wars.

You’re absolutely right we shouldn’t celebrate that a maniac hasn’t engulfed Europe in war since 1945. This is an incredible feat for anyone with an elementary understanding of history.

We’re at the longest period of time that a unified Germany hasn’t started a war.

Obviously there are still authoritarians seeking control and starting wars, but they tend not to exist where free markets do. Apologies if that’s inconvenient for your politics.

I think there is a very good chance this is true, but it also paints the picture of the board being incompetent and incapable of confrontation. They could have filed formal complaints, mandated increased scrutiny, handed off Sam's responsibilities to other people, or threatened legal action. Instead, they attempted a secret coup, which of course makes Sam look like the underdog

"Filed a formal complaint" with whom? The board itself is the final authority, empowered to investigate and act. If its members have concerns, they either do something or don't. There's nowhere else to pass the buck.

> "Filed a formal complaint" with whom?

For their own records. They can use it for justification for disciplinary action or legal ammunition. It is always useful to document things in writing. It's the same reason why companies will put you on PIP.

Are you claiming Genghis Khan was mindless?

I am claiming that if genghis khan was born today, he’d most likely end up very rich in Palo Alto. Digital conquest of the steppe

I would not mindlessly think you know how everything went down just by a few articles.

That argument flows in both directions. Why defend the guy if you don't know "how everything went down"?

There is no logical equivalence between being skeptical and jumping to a conclusion based on possibly biased statements from involved parties.

Kind of ironic that people are jumping in here to defend Sam Altman on the message board of Y Combinator, which also fired him from an executive leadership role for similar reasons.

Did that stuff with his sister ever get resolved?

"Resolved" in that it seems to get no attention, and hasn't since shortly after it originally blew up.

As far as I know, she never retracted her claim of "sexual, physical, emotional, verbal, and financial abuse". And he never admitted to any of the above.

What if you realize that the board is wrong?

Then you tell them so, in a meeting with all board members present, and argue your position in good faith. You don't lie to them. You certainly don't scheme behind the back of a board member you don't agree with to try to get them fired.

And if you realize there's no way to convince them that they are wrong? But it's a matter of survival of the entire universe?

Better to have a company than not have one right?

Humanity would prefer no cigarette companies but sure, Philip Morris employees and shareholders would love to still have it. Remember that "OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity." If their for-profit arm is obstructing that...

Look if you think the whole company should be shutdown, then say that.

But don't pretend like any of the employees are going to go along with that. Just admit that the goal is to actively sabotage the company and shut it all down.

Then, all those employees can understand what you want, and they can go work for Microsoft instead, doing the exact same job that they were doing before, but now without the board sabotaging the company.

It's definitely a hard one to imagine. I will be waiting for an AI generated film about this.

It's also a similar reason that Sam was fired from Y Combinator. None of this should be new, it's just when there's money on the line people's memories get as fuzzy as their morals.

I didn’t know he was fired from y combinator, what were the details?

Only speculation:

"In 2019, Altman was asked to resign from Y Combinator after partners alleged he had put personal projects, including OpenAI, ahead of his duties as president, said people familiar with the matter."

Regardless, this is another in a recent string of blows to YC's reputation for making people believe Sama moved on when in reality he was fired. What do you call making people believe something that's knowingly not true? Deception?
