Used to be with Visible up until a few months ago, but their issues with deprioritization started to make it almost unusable. I'd often look at my phone and have 3-4 bars, but nothing would load. Speed tests indicated data in the kilobytes range or just failed.

Switched to US Mobile (which as long as you have a 5G capable phone, puts you on their high-priority QoS tier) and haven't had an issue since.

Tethering is less restricted on MVNO's because often they can't do anything to stop you anyway. I've been tethering on prepaid plans for over ten years now without issues, and without paying anything extra for it.

Last decade of MVNO acquisitions has been wild:

T-Mobile acquired Metro and Mint

AT&T acquired Cricket

Verizon acquired TracFone

Dish acquired Boost, Ting, Republic, and Gen

From experience, Dish has been awful to deal with after acquisition: service barely works anymore

Visible. It's actually a Verizon subsidiary, but you pay $25/mo for unlimited talk and data (though low priority data). There's a trivial hoop you need to jump through to get that rate (join a group of other people with whom you never need to actually interact; there are multiple googelable public groups).

Tmobile offers a 15$ prepaid plan too. They just don't promote it as much. I've been on it for about 3 years

Their $15 has a little less data than the mint $15 plan, and has a hard cutoff instead of throttling if you exceed your data limit.

T-mobile coverage got considerably better in rural areas sometime around 4 years ago. I did a lot of long drives and would completely lose service for long stretches in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, much of Ohio. Now I can't think of any time in recent years that I've gotten no service. The strength of coverage does occasionally drop if I'm way out in the boonies but it's so much better than it used to be.

As someone who did a cross-country trip on Mint, the entire state of Nebraska up until just recently had no coverage.

T-Mobile subscribers had coverage in Nebraska because they paid to peer for their subscribers, but Mint Mobile customers did not benefit from that.

Looking at Mint's coverage map, Nebraska now has coverage (it only took until 2023!)

Maybe I just have a soft spot since he's Canadian, but I think in this case Mint's provided some real genuine net benefit for consumers and I think using Reynolds positioning helped them get there.

I found myself using up a lot of data every other month or so. Price kinda got really high. Other than that its a alright service.
