It was actually originally announced/demoed on a Galaxy Nexus running ICS back in 2011! They might have removed it at some point after that and added it again for the Pixel 4 since its entire gimmick was the soli sensor

Really surprised to hear this. I've had really bad luck with face unlock. I find I have to type in my PIN half the time anyway. On the other hand, with my previous pixel that had a fingerprint reader, I never had any issues with it whatsoever. I think face unlock is a bit of a regression on the part of device makers.

I have dry hands and fingeprint sensors stop recognizing them aftere about a week (or month if it is summer season) - so it is really frustrating.

On the other hand Face Unlock works always (well, unless I wear a mask, then it works just like fingeprint - doesn't).

Tried fingeprint sensors on iOS devices and Pixels.

I find face unlock amazing. The only situation that sucks is with the mask.

I think they could make it work even with masks. Just focus on the eye regions.

Apple worked on it, don't know if they released it with iPhone 13.

I'm curious why, what does face unlock do for you that fingerprint doesn't? If I'm unlocking my phone, I have my hands on my phone, so using my fingerprint isn't a hassle. Plus with COVID and needing to wear masks, I can still unlock my phone easily without needing to pull down my mask.

I got sweaty hands and that doesn't work with TouchID. FaceID has been great, well at least until COVID. I'd really prefer both.

Similar situation for me (but I have dry hands).

Fingerprint sensors stop recognizing after about a week - so I prefer Face Unlock.

This is just how product announcements look these days. I want to say this was popularized by Apple but I don't have a source on that. If you doubt that, here are some quotes from Apple's new product pages from yesterday: 'most powerful', 'scary fast', 'scary faster', 'best display ever', 'super fluid' Not to mention the product names: 'pro' vs 'max', 'liquid retina', ... Yet I don't see people complain about those.

Oh, I didn't see those (I currently could not care less about Apple products). Good point, they're all bad.

Agreed on the glass backs. Aluminium was way better. My Pixel 4 slides off just about anything, even surfaces that are just a few degrees tilted. Also, what is the point?

If they go plastic back, it looks and feels cheap. If they go metal, wireless charging breaks. I guess they could do alcantara or something. Tough spot to be in. FWIW, the iPhone mini at least fits in my hand, so they get bonus points regardless of sharp edges. It does kind of stink needing a case to prevent it flying away. I might just be a curmudgeon, but a lot of the newer tech products (iPhones being the exceptio…

Unpopular opinion: I prefer feel "cheaper" material like Nintendo devices. Such devices can be treat without hassle, and lightweight is important.
