MSN Messenger was censoring some words, if I remember correctly like "Summer Jam" and "papaz". I was unable to find those words but I have found a related news article https://circleid.com/posts/07080616_msn_messenger_censor_inf... Since Facebook was partially bought by Microsoft I believe Messenger is continuation of MSN Messsanger. I abandon such applications without hesitation.

Yep, it was censoring messages containing specific words and links alike. Silently.

I've got bad news for you about HackerNews then, HN has 'dead' users who can post but are only shown if you specifically opt-in and they can't be replied to at all.

But those comments from dead useres can be "vouched" for if they appear to be in good faith, and one or more of those seems to take people out of dead status, I think. I'm not sure what points threshold grants that ability, or how long it has existed, but I do it every few month or so when I see a comment that seems to be perfectly fine but the comment is dead. I think that might be a pretty good mechanism, all said…

HN would be a useless trove of violence and hate if all [dead] comments were automatically unhid. Folks who are into 8chan might be into a community like that, but I personally much prefer the moderated approach taken today.

The sooner the general public learns about steganography, the better. Unfortunately, the sentiment of anti-intellectualism and blissful ignorance propagated by corporate entities who realise knowledgeable users are more difficult to control and monetise will be a big hurdle against that happening. Edit: steganography, not stenography.

I think you mean steganography (hiding secret message in plain sight), not stenography (techniques for writing/typing less).

I think I missed it too. I didn't even downvote.

Conversation at dinner with a group of your friends and their friends is going to function a lot more smoothly than one at a table of atheists, christian fundamentalists, Jews, Sunni and Shia Muslims, Americans, Russians, Chinese, Tibetans, Israelis, Pakistanis, Indians, liberals, conservatives, socialists, capitalists, libertarians, fascists, anarchists, environmentalists, trans people, cis people, homophobes, racis…

Being on the internet and unmoderated doesn't mean you have to engage with everybody. The idea is that you get to choose what sort of conversation to engage in, and who to /ignore. Hardly different from "real life", except that the internet gives you a larger pool to engage with and better tools to deal with it.

Indeed. Thanks!

People don't seem to understand the ramifications. I prefer truth to being enslaved into conformance by "the algorithm".

I think the anonymous internet was way better. People tend to group anyway, so it's not like everyone is forced into the same room.

If the_donald proved anything in 2015 and 2016, the loudest most malicious folks intentionally ram themselves into all communities. The suggestion that bad actors will keep to themselves is the absolute opposite of reality.

It was not because uncensored content. It was bastly superior because there was a lack of comercialization. Before SEO, before targeted ads, an internet made by educacional institutions and people with hobbies. Nowadays allow everybody to post anything and you will only see SPAM for the rest of you life, it will become impossible to see anything of value.

I'm not sure if I agree or disagree with you -you definitely have a point, though. From my point of view it's less commercial vs non-commercial (though I think most of the problems either stem from, or are aggravated by commercial factors) as much as it is diversity versus consolidation. Ten, fifteen years ago there was a greater number of varied forums and social gathering places with a greater number variety of view…

There is a case where I'm pretty sure commercialization is the problem. Phone app stores are modeled on Linux repositories. Linux repositories are good. App stores are awful. The problem is the level of interest from bad actors, and the reason they're interested is the commercialization.

Why anyone should care if you can't send links to websites run by kooky nutjobs with false or highly questionable COVID information to other people via FB messenger?

Because of the precedent that sets. For example, some would hold that socialism is as economically illiterate as anti-vaccine opinions are medically illiterate to you. Should socialist links be likewise censored?

What about links that call for violence / genocide? Should those be delivered to avoid setting a precedent?

Why is anyone still using FB? They've been arbitrarily censoring content for some time now. Back when the CoViD-19 lab leak theory was a "conspiracy theory" they actively removed that content. Now that it's no longer a "conspiracy theory" I guess it's okay to share links about it now. What has changed? The same goes for the Hunter Biden laptop story. Back when it was "Russian propaganda" it was censored. Now that it's been verified, I guess it's okay.

Honestly, do you want FB deciding what is "truth" for you?
