Core and cache organization gets more difficult, yes. So do thermals and layout, which is not where Apple has experience (they don’t make any custom chip that requires a fan that I know of). That said, they have had a looong time to think out this, so I have confidence they will make it work over the next two years.

Well, Apple TV 4K has one technically ;)

Why would you bother when your competitor (AMD) is literally nowhere? For example, in 2013 AMD's revenue was something like 7% of Intel's.

Probably not.

macOS has had RAM compression since 2009; by now, it's probably implemented in the M1 SoC, so it's really really fast.

8 GB on an M1 is closer to 16 GB on most other processor/operating system combinations.

What do you mean 10 years? TSMC didn't really start beating Intel until 2016-18.

Doesn't include monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, webcam, microphone, battery backup, and fingerprint scanner which would be necessary to make it "comparable" to a base model Macbook Air. It also isn't a portable, fanless laptop which has its perks.

There are plenty of 8 core/16 thread Ryzen 4750U laptops for around the same price that outclass the M1 in multicore benchmarks.

It may outclass it in performance. However, all my life I've been waiting for something that runs over 10h on a single charge. I am naturally surprised that this is not something that ppl truly appreciate in a laptop. Hell, I even bought a cheap Atom laptop once just to have more battery time. So as of now, there's literally no decent competitor to M1 laptops. One must be living under a rock to buy anything but Apple and this is coming from someone who doesn't have Apple products and always hated their walled off ecosystem. I am reconsidering my life choices :)

Can you provide a link where they say it beats everything ? Because on their marketing page they specifically compare it to laptops and refer to low-power use cases. I have never seen them compare it against HEDT platforms.

Of course it's more reasonable to compare it with other low power CPUs in laptops, and not desktop CPUs with 5x the TDP that cost as much as the mac mini before you even buy the rest of the PC, I agree with you on that - I'm just pointing out that people are making these comparisons because Apple themselves did it first.

Let’s not forget that the M1 is the budget (for Apple), low performance SoC. Let’s see what the M1X is like mid next year.

Also M2 is going to be for the mid-range 14/16" MacBook Pro + iMac. You will need to wait for the M3 in 2022 for the true desktop HEDT/Threadripper competitor.

It’s not like AMD is going to be standing still for the next few years though

Using a laptop screen for 10 hours a day is a waste of a day, and if you're at your desk with multiple monitors then you don't need a laptop.
