> The job itself caters to the natural disposition of women much more than men. Imagine saying that about, I dunno, the field of computing.

Sure, let's do it: "Sitting in front of a computer geeking out about code, engineering, and electrical signals, caters much more to men than women." And that's a fact. Women prefer relational jobs.

would go as far to say it caters more to trans women then men?

I have no idea how men who take hormones and hormone-blockers feel and prefer. Haven't studied the matter that deeply. I'd say it alters preferences, but that's a wild guess.

There's been a lot of talk about "toxic masculinity" over the years but I've heard of and would worry about the female equivalent if I were considering a role in nursing as a man. Many stories where the only man in the room is expected to be, simultaneously, a punching bag, a mediator for drama, and a willing recipient of sexual advances. Seems awful

> Many stories where the only man in the room is expected to be, simultaneously, a punching bag, a mediator for drama, and a willing recipient of sexual advances. In other words, men in nursing are treated to the same indignities that women experience in most jobs?

Yes, the main difference being we have no systems in place to deal with that for men. Or, the broader societal context: men have never had a progressive movement.

It's frustrating that the only suggestion the experts interviewed have here is essentially blue-washing woman-dominated jobs. "For instance, many health care jobs could be framed as roles requiring the strength to lift people. Preschools could highlight the need for teachers who serve as positive male role models." Just reads as that one SMBC comic - "how can we make math pink ?" As if the only way they can understan…

Isn't it only a question of marketing? There's only so many lumberjacks needed in an economy. Sure you can depress the wages for awhile but there's still a limit. So you need Men do to something else and the way you do that is with marketing (and also with Men being unemployed until they accept a nursing job).

It's not a question of marketing, it's a question of progressivism.

We expanded job opportunities for women by telling them they can do anything, be anything, and he just as good as men at it. That they're built for anything, and that they aren't naturally forced to do anything one thing.

There are infinite ways to be a woman. There is one way to be a man. That's the problem. We should not be trying to convince men that nursing fits into that one way. Rather, we should be telling men that it's okay to have traditionally feminine jobs.

We've never had a progressive movement for men. We really require that if we're gonna get men, as a whole, to take these jobs seriously.

Here's another explanation. My hypothesis goes deeper than gender imbalance. Most job interviews are theater nowadays. It's about conformity, performative culture fitting, agreeableness (read, willing to slave away without complaining). On average, women tend to better suited for such processes. Along with immigrant groups.

> On average, women tend to better suited for such processes. Along with immigrant groups. This is quite the claim, and I would understand anyone taking deep offence by it. Can you substantiate it?

Not the commenter, but my take:

Women are taught from a young age of how to engage with their role in a patriarchal society. This includes caretaking, nurturing, and having patience for men. It's not uncommon for young girls to be given household chores that they must "suck up" and do while they're brothers get away with not doing chores.

In addition, we associate politeness and pleasantness with femininity. A woman ought to be kind and softspoken, and must not swear or raise her voice. We associate masculinity with abrasiveness, stubbornness, arrogance, and rage.

In most jobs and, in fact most social processes, the former is more useful to take advantage of. This could be why women, on the whole, would do better in interviews.

In addition, it is well-known that women socialize much more, including more conversing. They are probably much better at being social on the whole because of that. Meaning, women are much more likely to be charming and likable than men.

Who still lifts garbage cans into a truck, male or female? It's been cab and camera operated hydraulic lifts on wheelie bins for decades here.

Uh, anywhere around me in the US.

Well that's kind of sad.

Next you'll be telling me that male US farmers roll up several thousand yards of fencing by hand to move it rather than have female jillaroos spool it up on a hydraulic spindle.

Are you saying this should be acceptable behavior? Am eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

No, that's not at all what I'm saying. Rather, I am pointing out that irony in the hope that men, dismayed by the treatment of men in certain professions, but find within themselves the empathy to appreciate what women go through and to adjust their behavior accordingly.

You seem to be assuming that the men who exhibit toxic behavior toward women are the same people as those who find such behavior appaling when it’s toward men. Do you have any evidence for that?

This isn't the best way to use HN. > Be kind. Don't be snarky. Converse curiously; https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

Do you think your comment was any of those things? Why are you free from the bounds of courtesy, but fall back on them the moment someone responds in kind? Do you really believe that women cannot arc weld? Do you really believe that women cannot scuba dive? Do you really believe that women cannot lift 25kg or take out the trash? If you do, then it's rather unkind and incurious to cast half of the human population as…

Are you seriously implying the entire administration is a manosphere army?

I'm implying that Trump is the paragon manosphere avatar, and his administration is filled with little versions of him. The purpose of the entire administration is to challenge incumbent government apparatuses (it opened with DOGE which broadly did precisely that, they reoriented the DoD from defense to committing war crimes, they took over DOJ and turned it into a personal law firm for Trump, etc.) for the benefit o…

You have completely confused manosphere and far-right authoritarians in your mind.

The manosphere movement is about fighting misandry, for men's rights, and, to be a little reductionist - how to get laid easily and avoid committing resources to women. It's basically the fan club of Andrew Tate and the likes. They are not competent or resourceful enough to take control of a government.

There's an overlap in the venn diagram, sure. But it's much smaller than what you think it is.
