let me piggyback on this thread because maybe there’s a kind soul here who knows the answer. I set up some simple cron jobs in Claude Code that run every few hours. I am on the Pro plan and unfortunately, I cant fully solve this one problem: I keep getting the error:

Invalid API key · Please run /login

I know there are a lot of github issues about this but most of them dont seem to directly apply. The weird thing is: when I run the exact same command manually in my terminal, it works fine. When run via cron, it fails. I suspect it has something to do with how Claude CLI stores the session token or environment variables, since cron doesn’t run as a full login shell. I already tried wrapping the command in bash -l -c "..." which helps in some cases, but not consistently. Has anyone here figured out a clean, reliable way to run Claude CLI from cron without having to manually relogin every 5 hours or so? Or is it only restricted for paid anthropic API Key?

it is like old school with time sharing systems -- you gotta be efficient when your turn comes up in the lab on the punch card and mainframes... instead of the mindless and endless trial-n-error hacking we are used to these days?

Except if you're waiting for your turn to come up so you can vibe code, you're combining mindless trial-and-error hacking with a deranged sleep schedule. It's the worst of both worlds.

For a landlubber like me, could you say something about what kind of joys might be possible expected? As a landlubber, the terrors are quite easy to imagine.

In no particular order: Marine mammals Sunsets with no land in sight. Sunsets framing the land. Sunrises with no land in sight. Sunrises framing the land. Thunder and lightning rolling up one side of an island in the distance, putting on a show. Dark skies and the stars. The peace and tranquility of quiet places with just nature and you. Until the sod over the hill turns on their generator. Fresh fish. The feel of se…

Yeah, but you mentioned the terrors

And interpreting the results, and writing the blog posts and posting. Become Claude

Why experimenting at all? Just ask Claude what will happen and it’ll write a nice report.

Ha! Skip the middleman entirely and just go straight to the source.

If Claude usage limits are this important to your life, it seems a little smarter to just bite the Claude Max bullet. Isn't an ordinary sleep schedule easily worth $180/month difference?

It sure is, but this has been a fun experiment because I want to sail solo in the future. If I can't vibe code while sleep deprived, I sure as heck won't be able to react to an AIS alert and change course in the middle of the night!

Have you done any offshore races?

Why isn't simply getting another Claude account an option that you've tried before damaging your brain with low quality sleep? Or writing prompts that get fired off by a script once the usage resets when sleeping so that you at least get some free tokies? I'm sympathetic to wanting to squeeze out what you can to control costs, but this is something that might only seem sustainable because you're too exhausted to full…

I believe both behaviors violate the Terms of Service - it's generally frowned on to create multiple accounts to work around usage limits, and I know the TOS prohibited scripted interactions designed to maximize 24/7 usage (the subscriptions are very much based on the assumption that you will "be normal" about them)

And yet businesses seem to have no trouble paying for multiple accounts. I’m sure OP could register as a business or even recruit a friend to pay for an account on his behalf. I don’t think Anthropic cares as long as you’re paying them for the two accounts…

I'm 80% certain that my Dad sunk his sailboat because he fell asleep: https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/elderly-man-reunites-... He's doing great, still sailing. That was the third boat he sunk. This was the most famous sinking: https://www.latitude38.com/lectronic/an-inspirational-sailor... Three shipwrecks in ten years might be a record?

Your comment was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, but I'm glad your dad is doing good!
