That easternmost part of the state is the "piney woods" and it's lovely compared to the concrete island that is Dallas. The forests have a mitigating effect on heat.

"Lovely" as in was settled only after AC and refrigerators were available widely.

Haha, did someone actually tell you the weather is fine? I was born in Texas and I've lived in Austin for 13 years and I've always thought the summers are unbearable. Although my perspective is tempered with what I experienced around the gulf, in Mississippi and Florida. The humidity there is so bad I literally don't think it's fit for human settlement.

San Francisco is one of the most humid cities in the US (so much that mold can be a problem in some cases). Relative humidity is on average higher than Wash DC --but lower than Port Arthur, TX.

But SF is also very chilly for California so it really helps with the perception of humidity.

Your Texas history could use some buffing.

Or appliance history at least (though we had iceboxes for quite some time!)

Maybe that's why we fought so hard for The Alamo; to clone it's futuristic A/C for later settlements...

Where does one build 3.5 million houses? The housing needs to be where jobs / etc, are. It should also be where resources are. A good deal of the state has water issues regularly; additional part of the state can't keep the power on due to - heat waves, fires, over use, winds, cats farting. The rural county I live in has open jobs, but a sizeable chunk of the work force is either seasonal (logging, etc) then coast on…

Exactly. Soviet style apartment cities are on the menu. Highly efficient and affordable.

This is true of the Midwest, too. After the months of winter 40° days are barbecue outdoors and go for hikes weather.

I moved to Texas during the pandemic, primarily because I didn't want to live in a city with heavy lockdowns or with most people risk averse. I think it's great that different cities had different responses, but my preference was to live somewhere that chose normal life over preventing the spread.

I moved back at the beginning of 2022 though, primarily because SF had reopened enough. I suspect that there are many people like me, although I also suspect that this change is not going to reverse any time soon.

We had this same thing before and Seattle residents used to call the people moving in from down south Californicators.
