The sooner the general public learns about steganography, the better. Unfortunately, the sentiment of anti-intellectualism and blissful ignorance propagated by corporate entities who realise knowledgeable users are more difficult to control and monetise will be a big hurdle against that happening.

Edit: steganography, not stenography.

You may have missed it in your rush to downvote me.

I think I missed it too. I didn't even downvote.

Conversation at dinner with a group of your friends and their friends is going to function a lot more smoothly than one at a table of atheists, christian fundamentalists, Jews, Sunni and Shia Muslims, Americans, Russians, Chinese, Tibetans, Israelis, Pakistanis, Indians, liberals, conservatives, socialists, capitalists, libertarians, fascists, anarchists, environmentalists, trans people, cis people, homophobes, racists, sexists, “the woke”, narcissists, sociopaths, frauds, manipulators, trolls, geniuses, average people, and imbeciles.

The Internet might have seemed “better” back then and like it didn’t need moderation. From many people’s perspective it probably was. But that was likely a function of the reality that most people on the Internet at the time had a lot in common with one another.

We don’t get the benefit of that luxury today.

> It's one thing to censor !!! Are we nonchalantly accepting its OK to censor and moving on to the argument about deceiving users? Edit: should add more context to this. I don't think we should be casually OK with censorship. Next thing you know, FB will silently(or not) start censoring political opponents, activists they don't like, etc. I am quite unsettled by how the west is doing the same as China. Censorship is…

>Are we nonchalantly accepting its OK to censor and moving on to the argument about deceiving users? Personally I'm disturbed at the non-chalant attitude taken towards shadow moderation in this thread. Shadow banning and shadow moderation may make one's job easier but it has a disastrous effect on the forum or community by injecting a definite level of deceit into the moderator/poster relationship. Any forum where sh…

You say that as if it's fact, but I'm not sure it is. HN has a method of shadow banning that is reversible if you are noticed as posting stuff that contributes and follows the guidelines, and even when you are shadow banned, people can opt into seeing your contributions (I've had showdead on from day one, I think).

There are places in the internet you can go to make sure you are heard and you can say whatever you want. If you prefer to post here instead of there, then some examination on why that is might be warranted, and specifically whether the thing you are complaining about helps or hinders making this place somewhere you feel worth spending time.

Youtube does this with comments - your UI makes impression the comment is posted, but it actually is not.

(Sometimes the comment can also dissapear from your UI as well - I've tried editing a comment, but it fails saving and after page refreh the comment dissapeared. Reproduced that multiple times.)

This is another reason to only use E2EE FOSS messengers, ever.

That would not prevent this.

Assuming it's some kind of active censorship and not a bug, how would this be possible with Signal for instance?

I just tried and it worked?

100% did not work during the election. I was able to convince my siblings to leave Messenger (where we had our “sibling” chat) because if it. Censoring public FB posts is one thing, but I don’t need zuck telling me what I can say in a private conversation. That’s too far.

If it was so common why not provide documented evidence? It would seem like a pretty important thing to document, assuming it actually happened.

It's one thing to censor, but it's another to intentionally deceive your users into believing that they sent something.

It's not a public square for being successful, don't use Facebook if you don't like it. I don't either.

So were the people who used it. Times have changed. Maybe the last time you went to a bar you saw the bouncer eject some hulking meth-head, drool dribbling down his bib, for getting handsy with strangers and throwing a bottle at the bartender. Well, that meth-head has a social media presence today too.

Not really -usenet of old had stalkers and harassers; that's how the killfile was invented. That is a very, very good analogy, however. The internet of old had a wider variety of establishments that you could go to. If you wanted a rough-and-tumble dive bar experience it was there. If you wanted a polished experience it was there too. The effect facebook and other social media has had on the internet is the same effe…

Sure, Usenet had its antisocial users, and quite a few seedy groups, too. My point is that it's worse today... much worse. In the early 90s the net was mostly students, profs, tech workers and professionals.

Think of the scariest person you've ever met (really, take a moment and actually do it) and ask if he or she would have been online in 1995; the chances are they would not. But they are now.
