Will iTunes disappear in Big Sur - is the alternative equally good? I originally put off installing Catalina because I didn't want to lose iTunes.

iTunes disappeared in Catalina, replaced by Music. For all of my uses it's functionally equivalent.

iPod sycing moved to Finder, but other than that it's not very different.

The best thing about this is being able to run natively iOS apps (with new chips). I'll probably never open another Electron app on desktop again. Wonder how the file management works.

Does that mean we can run Slack iOS app on Mac Silicon? That'll be great, if its possible. Slack Electron mac app consumed too much battery.

I was struggling to think of an actual use-case for running iOS apps on a Mac, but this is an interesting one

Is the full screen behavior still the same? Is it possible to disable apps from expanding to full screen and instead only expand to maximum size? The top menu bar is also hidden when apps go full screen. I think the only alternative is to hold down option key when expanding the window.

Great for short cuts to resizing your screens better then the OS Version I was using before.

Any updates to the firmware or drivers for bluetooth? My 2017 Mac has had many issues with bluetooth consistency. Keep on hoping they will announce performance improvements.

Anecdotal: Before Catalina, I had constant BT issues with Logitech and Microsoft BT mice on my 2015 MBP.

After upgrading to Catalina ~10 months ago the MS mouse has been flawless in daily usage. I haven't gone back and tried my Logitech mice.

You'll first need to get an arm version of Windows for that.

Windows and Office have existed in ARM versions since 2011: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_RT Windows 10: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/arm/ Windows IoT Core for Raspberry Pi: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=550... Not to say they'll run on Apple Silicon, mind, but it's not like Windows is x86/AMD64 only.

But as of now Microsoft only licenses Windows 10 for ARM to OEMs, so as an end-user it's not possible to have a legal copy running in a VM.

The JetStream, MotionMark, and Speedometer benchmarks are fairly "grounded in reality", don't you think? That's where the speed claims come from on this page: https://www.apple.com/safari/

I have no expertise in this, but I think it’s a safe bet that every major vendor can find benchmarks that favor their particular browser. (Edit: and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25073625 should make it quite easy for Apple)

Not in this case, especially when Apple calls out Chrome and Firefox and they haven't said otherwise.

These are the industry standard benchmarks, so there's that.

Besides its ad blocking limitations, I'm disappointed that Safari doesn't support WebGL 2 by default. It is the only one of the mainline browsers that doesn't. Firefox, Chrome, and even Edge have had it enabled for eons.

I recall reading something from an Apple engineer about fixing something before enabling WebGL 2.0 by default. But it's only a click away: Develop > Experimental Features > WebGL 2.0

The problem persists when wanting to deploy something using webgl2, since the vast majority of Safari users will not have changed the default.

Every since the last few betas of Big Sur, I can't play Youtube videos in Safari anymore. It always gives a playback error. They all work fine if I copy the URL and load it in Chrome. Is this just me or anyone else?

It was fixed in the first Release Candidate. Are you running the latest version?

Ah no I didn't do last week's update yet. Haven't had a few hours to be without my computer. Thanks for the tip.

Any updates to the firmware or drivers for bluetooth? My 2017 Mac has had many issues with bluetooth consistency. Keep on hoping they will announce performance improvements.

I've noticed this in the last month/two - on my 2018 MBP as well - my Logitech MX keys/mouse will both randomly disconnect for 5 seconds and then pair back, this wasn't happening before.

I don't use bluetooth input devides so can't comment on those, but I too noticed regressions in the last month or so with regards to AirPods.

They changed the firmware so that it can "seamlessly" move between devices but 1) it's not seamless at all - I actually disabled the new behavior and 2) I'm pretty sure something else changed regarding Bluetooth because switching between devices manually is slower and less reliable than it used to be before, and I bet this change is also responsible for the issue with input devices that you're seeing.

I hope they provided with this update a way to examine the Others category that usually takes up so much space in our Mac devices. I've emptied my documents, removed as much possible clutter I can see and still, that Others space is taking 60% of my storage.
