In the end, everyone is looking for a big platform shift (next MOBILE!!!) and hype getting ahead of reality. In the long run, sure. In the short to medium term, though, they solidly dominate the field. We're still in that phase phase of both Tesla and Bing AI.

It will be interesting to see how the next few years play out in the EV space. Tesla suddenly has actual competition that is very good. Arguably better, aside from that nagging little detail -- the charger network. Tesla needs to keep throwing money at the Supercharger network and do whatever they can to keep it exclusive. Anything that puts the competition on an equal playing field for fast charging would be devastating to Tesla's market share.

Journalism has been like that for a while now. Sometimes it's just as bad as when the media quotes a random tweet from a nobody as their source for "the people" or "the public".

He has brought no innovation and his fearfulness has ground Google down to a halt. What new successful products has arrived during his tenure? All he did was not fuck up. Airpods, apple watch, m1 processors. I'm sure there are others but I've bought and enjoyed a bunch of new apple products since Tim Cook took over

Not necessarily. The big issue they've got to overcome is hallucination. If they can do that, these LLMs will have some staying power in providing search responses. If not, they'll still be useful creative tools.

Another possibility is that the LLM just gets used as an NLU front-end to the search engine. In that case keyword search essentially goes away and semantic search allows people to actually ask questions rather than playing the keyword/phrase guessing game.

Either way, it seems like the advertising game on the web is going to change.

They're the guys who built it. It's not like he's demoing something that they spent 4 days building. It's been in dev for 4 years. Everyone knows Google is primarily a BD play right now. The engineering there is in the "we'll make the button blue by next quarter" quality. But BD plays build quite good moat. So I think they'll be fine.

Could you explain what you mean by Google being a “BD play”? I’m not familiar with that term.

They are primarily dependent not on technology but on their incumbent position which lets them negotiate strategic business deals to protect their market.

Their advantage is not technological.

There seems to be an inordinate amount of venom directed at Pichai relative to other CEOs

What did he achieve?

Google search is worse than before.

Youtube recommendations feel worse than before.

Gmail lets in spam (maybe I was unlucky few times).

Android market / play market has very bad search...

Rest is stagnating? Maybe even better, at least they dont change it for worse.

They hired thousands of employees yet you cannot contact a person. What do those people even do?

"Everyone" (apart the CEO?) knows that in Google you get promoted for shipping half baked stuff, so for years they ship half baked stuff to kill it few years later.

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard Google has lost its mojo. Same thing with Wave, Google Plus, Allo, Reader, countless examples.

They have lost their mojo in that they've failed countless times to diversify their business revenue stream. They're in the same boat as Meta in that regard. Especially if you compare them to Microsoft, Amazon and Apple who have all made good progress in diversifying over the last decade or so.
