What is "fix-the-internet"?

I am going through Patrick's post here, and the website but still really no clue what is "fix-the-internet"?

Wordpress, DDG, Kickstarter have very different purposes. If the definition is so broad then I could surely fall into it. How does one know?

"Fix the internet" then links your instagram. Seems like you are part of the problem? Edit: Or maybe I have a very different view of what fixing the internet means. The peertube content sponsoring currently on the frontpage seems much more constructive to me.

I totally agree with this. If the internet needs a fix, it is about getting off the big players. Getting off this constant feed of nonsense. Being more personal, more one-to-one instead of "hey look at my feed, it has 2 million mindless people looking at it right now".

i would love to see a whole TLD that was ad-free. Or perhaps go one step further create a whole alternate name service so we can ditch corrupt ICANN while we're at it. Either way you'd want clear borders for this ad-free internet and be able to legally deport violators.

I launched a new search engine a few months ago and have been looking at several alternative ways to fund it, but none of them seem to be a viable path. The best balance of privacy and user experience seems to be display ads related to search term context that don't do any tracking (like billboards in the real world). But even that isn't an easy proposition and will need a custom network built to generate those type…

Do you realize how much we are all paying on average already to Google? There is no free lunch. Googles money comes from advertisers who get that money from us -- nearly everything we buy today has advertising and marketing costs baked in. For many things, those costs actually exceed materials and labor for the simple product.

Excerpt from an old comment of mine [1]:

Mozilla Research put the entire web's advertising revenue at $12.70/month per user. In other words, if they are right we are living with the consequences of advertising for a mere $13/month, $13 dollar they still get from us anyway because it's baked into the prices of the advertised products.

Working on it... it's not quite so simple though. I did however quit working for them, despite the promise of a nice desk in the space ship.

Apple is in no way the worst offender, but they are in many ways the largest.

With great prominence comes great indifference it seems.

How can anyone defend the decline in quality Apple's entire line has suffered in the past years. Qualities that enabled my personal development as a software engineer, creative hobbyist, and overall human being are now trashed like yesterdays news. Ideas critical to the foundation of the industry, now forgotten or unlearned.

I'm becoming desperate for action, but remain paralyzed by the scope. Please forgive me for not throwing away my iPhone sooner.
