Less than that, between 900MB and 1.2GB and that's due to file and stuff indexation. The good thing on Linux and BSDs is you can swap for a light wm/compositor and your back below 150MB idle.

The reason this advice is bizarre is that old memory isn't actually that dear. The machines that would have had 2GB of RAM or less would be from the Core 2 Duo era or so, taking DDR2 or DDR3, and typically supported 8-16GB. 8GB of DDR3 is currently in the ballpark of $10 and the machines that take it can be found by the pallet in the "free e-waste" pile, so who is going to suffer <2GB instead of 8GB over $10?

With laptops of this era you only have two sodimm slots and DDR2 4GB RAM modules were quite expensive when they were new. So even still today they are more expensive than you would think. I sold mine for $25/each a few weeks ago. Also some laptops of this era didn't support more than 4-6GB of RAM in the firmware. I sold my P14s Gen5 AMD with 96GB RAM for more than I paid for it 18 months ago and resumed using my X230 w/i7-3615QE mod and 16GB DDR3 on Arch with MangoWM. It's fine. It's a worse computer, but not €1500 worse.

Hence why it's a bad faith comment. It moves the goalposts to throws bs accusations without facts to back it up as a valid argument.

There are plenty of retrocomputing hobbyists who will appreciate these 32-bit machines, especially as they become more and more rare. Remove the CMOS battery, store it away for 10 years and then sell it for a nice profit on ebay. Assuming you have the free space, that is)

What do you mean what context? Just move yourself 10 years in past and see how RAM much web browsing used.. There is just no sane reason why it balooned so much.

Of course, progress needs to be done. Better graphics, more data.. But now all the consumption goes into shitty decoration with is useless and waste resources.

Other big usage is all that ads and tracking shit behind the scene..

Any distro. You just install a very light display manager like cdm(or no dm) and a light window manager/compositor (icewm, windowmaker,fluxbox i3/sway).

I tested it on Fedora. I tend to use Gnome as a main desktop s I like all the bell and whistles but use lighter config on VMs to save on RAM use. I reckon you could probably go below 100MB with a distro that doesn't use systemd.

Have a bit of decency and try it before talking about bad faith.

Slackware's running just fine on this system I've got with 15 year old DDR3 RAM without needing an article about it. It's not always thrilled with the fact that I made my urxvt's transparent, but I'm still rocking 20 open tabs on a regular basis without more than a little extra fan noise from time to time. It'd probably help if I replaced the fan(s) that died completely...

That is not even true. Most JS apps are smaller than photos on the page. High resolution media is the main culprit of web page sizes.

Anyway, what's 20mb for 2gb ram pc? Nothing. That is not an issue.
