Bank runs definitely still happen. Maybe not in the US, but in other countries they do. Latest example was in Russia when the announcement of the removal of Russian banks from SWIFT. Bank runs also happened in Greece, Canada, Bulgaria, Argentina and more, just in the 2000's.
