RuneScape taught me (as a kid about two decades ago) some very essential life lessons.

Who can I trust? How do I empower my team? What is the best way to turn fear and anxiety into success and glory?

I was scammed around 10 years old and I remember crying lol. But it also motivated me to play the game differently to focus on market factors and make all that money plus way more.

I remember being 11 with a dozen or so of the boys going into the deep wilderness with the boys taking on high level players as a group. We all had our roles and jobs. I recently heard the ancient magick ice barrage sound and it brought back those memories. We made so much money fighting in the wilderness, and some time later we got into the fishing and runes businesses. we had running business of lobsters, nature and law runes and it was way more lucrative than risking a lot in the wilderness.

I quit just after the grand exchange was implemented like 2008. Imo it was the end for me and I have never really played video games like that ever since. Probably never will since I’m an adult now and real life is way more fun. But the grand exchange really killed the “social” aspect of that game. You no longer needed to interact with others. The in game market and economy were basically removed. There was no longer a reason to interact with people in the game as everything became on demand.

Anyway this brought back some great childhood memories.

I'd love to see Jagex open source OSRS as a business decision to keep the game alive forever, and for leveraging the dedicated community. Now, I said open source, but that doesn't mean free. Even if the source was available, it would make the most sense if they kept it "non-free", as in, no commercial usage of the source may be allowed. People are free to run their own servers, but the Jagex ones will be "blessed". T…

'Open source' and 'free (as in speech)' are, in the software context, synonyms. It is incoherent to say 'open source but non-commercial'.

Are you deliberately invoking the Stallman acolytes?

I would love if someone forks this and turns it into an AI competition. Like that social network only for bots, this would be a runescape server only for bots.

There's a similar project where the intent is to automate the game - https://github.com/dginovker/2006rebotted I think 2009scape itself might even have some automation-focused servers as well

As a server focused on HQ graphics, botting doesn't quite fit with the values.

RIP The Falador and Varrock markets

There were spots dedicated to certain items, and this wasn't programmed in the game, it was ingrained in the folklore of the community.

I also got into programming like this. I even remember working with whitefang, the creator of whitescape, to try and build a 377 server when everyone was on 317. I don't remember if that attempt ever got anywhere though. I think what you're describing with all the code bases is why I lost interest. It felt like everyone was just doing their own thing without any collaboration. Unlike say World of Warcraft servers whe…

I'm into the wow emu world and it really isn't. There are several forks of mangos and people still don't share their changes.

I'm also in wow emu world and I agree. Maintainers seem to be quite picky with accepting changes.

there's also so many weird quirks to the projects, it's basically what keeps me coming back.

I wonder what the impact of social media has been. 1. I was on Runscape in the early 2000s. There was no Twitter, Facebook was very new and not really that popular, and nothing else existed. Like, I think Gaia was one of the more popular forums I knew of lol. That meant that Runescape was actually a highly social experience - it's insane the kinds of relationships I built as a 14-18 year old who played the game somew…

I never played RuneScape but man the talk about using it as a social platform brings memories back. Quake 2, Tribes 2, The Palace Chat, First star online (the PC thing that was like an open clone of Zelda) and a few others. I miss the community and shenanigans and overall super supportive friendly people.

Tribes 2 holds a special place in that they effectively built a proto-internet inside the game client.

It shipped with user-accounts, IRC (chat), newsgroups (forums), email (direct messages), LDAP (groups/clans/tribes), integrated voice, basically all the components of the internet except calendaring, and if you call CD-Keys like client certs... we'll, just impressive for any game and especially a game of the 2002 era.

Can't believe Runescape private server are still a thing after 18 years. This is what got me into programming. I remember working with the first version back in early 2006 I believe it was called winterlove. You couldn't even play multiplayer. Then someone got multiplayer to work, I think that was called blakescape, then there was cheezscape and whitescape which became the popular versions to use because they came wi…

Permabanned from r-s gang wya? I miss laughing at 2speced Tyler and Nikki not actually being a girl wasn’t much of a surprise.

Tyler and Blurr were legendary in the RSPS scene, 2speced was such a wellmade and maintained RSPS. I wonder where they are now.

Humor me for a moment. What decade did you go to high school in?

I'm in my late 30s! Can't wait to see what condescension comes next.

I didn't mean to sound condescending, I was genuinely curious. I was wondering if there's a correlation between age and aesthetics, but we're about the same age.

OSRS players have not been "stuck with low quality graphics". The appeal of that version of the game is as a whole. It was not just "the version without the one later change that wasn't liked". It was the version before the general change in approach. The big problem with the "HD" version was that it was inconsistent. They couldn't update the whole world at once (or chose not to) so they updated it in bits, and those…

Slight quibble: that flex culture you and the parent discuss, embodied by going for 99s/200ms pre-skillcapes, definitely existed; you just weren't privy to it. Places like the tip.it forums were full of flex - remember those autogenerated stats signatures? - but that was its own little niche, not the dominant culture. You're probably right that social media amplified that dynamic a lot, but people like Zarfot and clans like DivinationX[0] were all about no xp waste well before that ethos hit the mainstream. It came from somewhere, rather than appearing fully formed from a seashell.

I think you both have good points around how a monoculture makes the game less rich and more theme-park-MMO-ish. I always felt that one of the things that helped it feel a bit more like a world simulator and a bit less like a game was the diversity of ways in which people interacted with the game. Wanna be the guy who only farms herbs? Knock yourself out, the game won't stop you and make you go save the world or whatever. When everyone has the same goal (which when I still played I thought of as the slayer-ironman industrial complex rather than no xp waste) you lose that and are back to the inherent absurdity of 50 million different Chosen Ones. It's just a little ironic that in a "no wrong way to play, do it for fun" kind of take you're calling out a wrong way to play.

Disclaimer: obviously very biased; multiply maxed

As someone who joined yesterday after seeing this HN post, I can honestly say I'm extremely disappointed in this. I went into this expecting a grand RS 2009 replica, but instead what I found was a twisted version of that filled with bugs and an obvious lack of attention to detail. Massive game breaking bugs at every turn. For example: the biggest glitch you can imagine; when your character dies you dont get moved back to spawn, but you could just pick up your own items lol. And another one that allowed infinite attack XP gain with an autoclicker(the dummys at varrock never cut you off past level 8 attack). Also missing NPCs everywhere that messed with the immersion. I logged 39 bugs in my first 24-36h playing, and didnt even get a chance to report them all because the tyrannical admin Ceikry banned my account for "bug abuse". all because I was talking about a HIGHLY obvious glitch that I found 10 mins after finding it and "abused" for literally 500xp. Unbelievable that this bug was allowed, and once I alerted them to it they did an emergency patch. I was banned for my "attitude". I really had high hopes for this and even planned on contributing pull requests to the game for new content like quests, among bug fixes but Im glad they showed their true nature before I got too invested and wasted my time with their immature antics. Just know this isn't a RuneScape remake, but a dark version of it - missing content - with weird custom features like PKing removed only in non-deep wildy(?)- and the wrong requirements for items (fremmenik cloak(?) ran by tyrant staff who bans you for shining light on their shocking incompetence.
