Unfortunately the blog didn't link to the SFP+ module they're using, but everyone should know there's effectively 2 different generations of 10gbit sfp+ to ethernet^H10BASE-T modules. The old gen, labeled as 30 meters, draws ~3 W, and gets extremely hot (to the point it'll usually cause link flaps), and the newer gen, usually labeled as 100m or 80m, draws ~1.5 W, and runs much, much cooler. I used to support a company that refused to run fibre, and had just run ethernet everywhere with the old 10GBE modules. Half their links were constantly flapping as the hardware powered off to cool down.

Even with the new modules, their ethernet cable runs were always in excess of what 10GBE could handle. I remember one at ~140 meters that was constantly renegotiating.

The worst part is, they had not a single element in their network that didnt support fibre. The fibre sfp modules for their radios was the same cost as the copper.

I love that these 10GBE modules exist but please (please please) just run fibre if you can.

I'm extremely happy after upgrading my network to 10gbit copper ethernet. It was much more expensive than I thought it should be, but worth it even if I only max it occasionally. Now I can easily fully saturate my 10gbit ethernet doing a first Time Machine backup or transferring files to my M.2 SSD NAS which saves me waiting rime and is satisfying to watch. 2 things here. Upthread is the discussion about the old 10GBE modules that would constantly turn off due to overheating. Thats left a sour taste in a lot of peoples mouths.

I dont have anything in my home network that matters enough to have 10GBE anywhere. If I did, I would just get fibre. My wireless is fine for most purposes except some HD streaming, and plain old 1 gig works fine there.

Thanks! 10Gb Eth is insane for exactly this reason (optical SFP+ modules are way cheaper and more reliable)

What's really insane is 40G - nobody wants it so you can buy kit for next to nothing. I got a 72×QSFP Cisco Nexus (with EVPN & VXLAN) for £50 inc P&P.

Old, hot and loud.

Industry went for 25G and 40G gear is long EoS and EoL.

I had this issue with old gen Unifi SFP+ to RJ45 10Gbe, 3 failed. Needed gloves to remove them. Bought newer gen and they are warm but i dont need gloves.

Same, just had two fail, in a qnap 100gb switch with a reasonable level of cooling… Meanwhile the 100g optics are actually doing just fine!

10Gbase-T is here to stay because you can deliver POE over it to wifi APs.

Yep... Did this 3 years ago in my home and came to the same conclusion. If I were to do it again, I'd run fiber through the walls instead of Cat-6a. It took forever to find SFP+ modules that would work with my Unifi setup... (not wanting to pay for more than one router or switch with native 10g RJ-45 ports, which are still very expensive.) I loose POE but, on the whole, it would've been much easier and much less cost…

I wish I had seen this before pulling all that Cat-6a.
