I've now seen more than one comics site use mechanisms that are completely under the control of the client (such as popover DOM elements and referrer-string checks) to control access to archives-by-date. (Just observing, not criticizing their choice, which may be perfectly reasonable for their market.)

The mechanism they use to limit their archive to paying customers is trivial for any web-savvy designer or engineer to circumvent.
