I guess technically it's supposed to play some role in making sure OpenAI "benefits humanity". But as we've seen multiple times, whenever that goal clashes with the interests of investors, the latter wins out.
The most surprising thing to me in this is that the non-profit will still exist. Not sure what the point of it is anymore. That entity will scrape the internet and train the models and claim that "it's just research" to be able to claim that all is fair-use.
At this point it's not even funny anymore.

Seeing so much money rolling in, hard to not want a slice of the pie.
Only hard if you're that kind of person. Not everyone is like that. And those kind of people have difficulty believing this.
That seems like fraud to me.
