So now I really wonder if it's some EMI from security equipment we run ourselves.
Believed this for a long time. ELINT has been a part of US embassies and the WH since forever. I think the overwhelmingly most likely reason is an own-goal side effect of counter measures.
I'm having a really hard time wrapping my head around this one. In foreign countries is one thing, but inside the White House? Options in my head: 1. Large, long-range directed energy weapon off the White House grounds that would need some advanced mechanism for aiming. 2. Smaller, shorter-range directed energy weapon that was snuck into the White House. 3. Not a malicious directed-energy weapon

Overly aggressive sweeper designed to energize passive only surveillance devices?

IIRC, the Russian Embassy in DC has a line-of-sight with the Whitehouse... This needs a fact check, corrections encouraged.
