E.g. just a quarter mile is already in the noise.

Parallax beyond the distance equivalent to that between the cameras very quickly drops the distance accuracy possible to resolve into the noise floor. E.g. just a quarter mile is already in the noise.
There's no reason to care about precisely measuring things a quarter of a mile away. Human drivers don't.

I would hold it against them. I think we should start with as many sensors as is necessary to get it working robustly. Over time we can then strip one or the other sensor as we see what we can do with software improvements. First get something working, then reduce costs, not the other way around.
I'm on the fence as to whether it's a good or bad decision ... but let's not pretend they're idiots.
