I think if everyone around you is telling you one thing and your contrarian impulses cause you to reject the conventional thinking, then you're the hipster. Don your tight cords, Laurent, and enjoy that band nobody else wants to listen to.
Since when has hipster meant rejecting the status quo and/or making a decision for yourself. I have always been under the impression that hipsters and lemmings had a lot in common.
Since the beatniks, at least. Note also phrases like "counter cultural movement", "tune in; drop out", "alternative music", and "alt country" (before they were absorbed by the machine). Ever heard of someone complaining about a band "selling out to go main stream"?
