Curious if I'm the only one here who thinks that LotR is overrated. Let them spend the money on a better story.

#12To be clear, I don't think that you should have to be a Christian to like Lord of the Rings -- quite the contrary. But given the lack of compelling Christian art in general the past 50 or 60 years, I sometimes find it a bit painful as a believer that such a notable counter-example is so often treated as if it can be separated from its author's profound religious convictions.

Lord of the Rings is a brilliant story, but I'd strongly prefer new material over another adaption.

The moral fiber of Tolkien shines through in passages like this:
Frodo: 'What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature when he had a chance!'
'Pity? It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded, Frodo. Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With Pity.'
'I am sorry,' said Frodo. 'But I am frightened; and I do not feel any pity for Gollum.'
'You have not seen him,' Gandalf broke in.
'No, and I don't want to,' said Frodo. 'I can't understand you. Do you mean to say that you, and the Elves, have let him live on after all those horrible deeds? Now at any rate he is as bad as an Orc, and just an enemy. He deserves death.'
'Deserves it? I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.'

This series is supposed to be set during the time of Morgoth. So the story is going to be completely different from LotR. I think they are just using the name as a stop gap (and maybe for PR) until they officially name the series.

#19Although I suspect this will not be a popular comment, I hope the Amazon series will remain faithful to the Catholic/Christian sense that Tolkien deliberately infused into these novels. Peter Jackson did a notably good job with that, all things considered. To be clear, I don't think that you should have to be a Christian to like Lord of the Rings -- quite the contrary. #20Is this what we do now? Remake things that are still in the majority of our living memories? Have the original LOTR movies stopped holding up? Are we playing the long game and intending to have an Into The Smiegalverse?
Edit: didn't realize that this is exactly what Amazon is doing! Fantastic!
