I'm a data scientist with seven years of experience spanning both data science and data engineering. I’m available in a range of capacities, whether that’s helping to push an existing data science/ML project across the finish line or coming in and starting a new project from scratch.

I’m particularly interested in helping companies design and implement a data science strategy prior to making a first data science hire. At most top-tier startups, the management team recognizes the need to build a data science organization. But getting started on that process is difficult, and far too many startups watch their first data science hire fail to deliver results.

Success follows from articulating the objectives and needs of the data science team, and that’s where I can help. By developing goals, ensuring data infrastructure is in place, and identifying needed skills, we can set your first hire up for success and avoid costly mistakes like hiring a deep learning engineer when what you really need is someone who can make dashboards.

I specialize in backend web programming using Python, Django, and PostgreSQL. On top of that, I can do a little bit of everything web-related, particularly:

- frontend (JS, jQuery, basic React)

- AWS (EC2, Elastic Beanstalk, RDS)

- Docker

- databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Redis, Elasticsearch)

- microservice architecture (if necessary!)

- Linux administration

My experience at startups has helped me learn how to build systems, and how to keep them running, simply and with minimal resources.

My latest project is a chess training site at https://www.checkmatechamp.net/ . That site runs on the Google Cloud Platform and uses Python and PostgreSQL on the backend. The frontend is a mix of vanilla JS and OCaml (using js_of_ocaml).

Hi there. I'm an experienced full-stack developer seeking some contract work, either one-off or ongoing.

I've built Rails apps for 12+ years (and have taught Rails at college) and am equally at home on the front-end. My most recent work is as the lead developer of an event ticket sales platform that processes millions in sales annually. I was also the lead on an aviation maintenance web app. If you work with HTML email you might also have used my Premailer project from long ago.

On the front-end I've worked with React / React Native / Redux / Typescript, including reaching the holy grail of sharing all the core logic between a mobile and web app in a single code base.

Previously I worked in tourism marketing, so I also have a strong appreciation for keeping focus on ROI and clear communication.

I haven't had much time for open source recently, but I'm happy to give you a tour of some private repos so you can see my work.
