Once intelligence is "solved", most humans are completely and utterly screwed.

There's the "Wally vs. Star Trek" theory of Artificial Intelligence (I know it sounds goofy, but it makes a difference when looking towards the direction of AI). If you look at the direction AI will take, science fiction is really all we have to go on and we have three platforms: Terminator - To be avoided at all costs (everyone agrees) Wally - AI does its best to "take care" of us, turning us into infantile, unthink…

That does sound like an interesting video, and I'd like to see it if you find it (or I might search for it later).

As for the Star Trek (TNG) interpretation of AGI, I suspect something like this in the real world would give rise to a kind of "oracle" situation, which creates its own dangerous problems. A system which functions as described only by observing and giving input where asked still has the potential to affect the outcome of events simply by being a reliable predictor.

A paper explaining this concept far better than I would be able to in a HN comment is available here: http://www.aleph.se/papers/oracleAI.pdf

Just a side note, Lex has been killing it with this podcast. He’s been able to land some remarkable guests for a relatively new show with a niche market. I personally think he does a great job of mixing up the conversation with both technical and philosophical angles. Highly recommended.

My favorite podcasts are Lex Friedman and Sean Carroll.

Anyone, please feel free to suggest other similar ones.

Jeff and Subutai have been on this hobby horse for a very long time. They don't have much to show for it, and many of their ideas are controversial even within neuroscience (for example, some think that their venerated "cortical columns" are structures without meaningful functions). It is very easy to bet against them given the fact that nothing much has happened, and "theories" about the brain are a dime-a-dozen. I'm glad that they have the gumption to go all-in on these ideas, but I'm not expecting anything earth shattering anytime soon.

That's the blessing/curse with completely self funded research group. No strict timelines, yearly review, benchmarks or external pressure. There is no hurry to deliver, you can dream on and keep developing your pet idea indefinitely. Nobody can tell you that you were wrong and you are now done.

Learning a lot about the neocortex. Any recommendations on how to learn more? @7:45 It’s the size of a dinner napkin, 2.5mm think, uniform, and similar in other animals. @9:50 if you took the optic nerve and attached it to another part of the neocortex, that part would become the visual region. @34:30 Thousand brains theory of intelligence.

Learn about the rest of the brain's components. Intelligence and cognition is greatly dependent on the limbic system. For example, while memory appears to be stored throughout the cortex, we can't form new spatial and event memories if our hippocampi are removed.

It seems to me that the cortex functions like a kind of FPGA which the brain's core machinery uses to expand its capabilities. It has a uniform micro-anatomy, regardless of function; functions correlate with connectivity to nerves and other brain regions; in cases of damage to the cortex, it is capable of remapping and rerouting functions and connectivity.

It's worth noting that the Wally and Star Trek interpretations are not incompatible. What are the trillions of people that can't qualify to be a red shirt doing? Probably zonked out in a holodeck

Once AI is invented it will be all of these things and more. The question is how will it be used instrumentally. The answer if we look at current trends is in various ways to harm most humans living on the planet to take away their agency, privacy, freedom, utility to other human beings, etc. Western foreign policy is already totalitarian and fascist, how will it affect pariah states or those who become pariah states? Horribly.

Eric Weinstein one was great.

What I meant is other podcast channels.
