It's probably not wise to move, but cross posting between YouTube and a personal PeerTube instance should be the route that content creators go at first. Agreed, but cross-posting is a pain so it probably won't happen.
Unless somebody makes an app to cross-post automatically, I don't see PeerTube getting much adoption from the mainstream.
Even if such a cross-posting app existed, it get shut down by YT pretty quickly. To survive, I think it would need to be well-supported open source endeavor.

#13I've recently gone on somewhat of a Google purge in the last few weeks, but the one thing I can't seem to shake is YouTube.
These platforms are made and broken by their content. Even though I absolutely support the "federate all the things" mentality (I'm a Mastodon user), I fear that YouTube will remain the default platform for the foreseeable future until PeerTube offers something other than "federated YouTube".
I also worry that what will inevitably happen is that one service will become the de-facto standard for video sharing, and effectively monopolize the thing anyway, such as with Gmail.
I built a prototype system based on Kademlia that addressed the second point, but I don't know how I'd convince anyone to actually use it.

One of the main challenges is that you don't just make a PeerTube account and start uploading. You have to somehow get hosting for your videos, don't you?
This isn't as bad as it sounds. Enough PeerTube instances are already open to general public.
i wonder if there's a model where ads are served and host, platform and creator all get a slice.

I am not familiar w/ the tech here (specifically concerning live streaming vs on-disk), but one wonders if you can proxy YouTube over PeerTube to ease the transition. Would require live search backed by site scraping, ability to stream YouTube videos over BT/PeerTube on demand, etc. Like youtube-dl but ephemeral, at least then content creators can dual host if they want. Or an easy-import feature. Or maybe just a com…
This should be quite easy, indeed. The streams themselves can quite easily be extracted, but what you probably lose is what I find makes YouTube powerful: Recommendations. Of course we could just go back to a subscription feed. I don't really see significant technical blocks here.

YouTube just needs to become worse. During adpocalypse and the censoring hype people were desperate to move and only vid.me was there. Now there's PeerTube. Some things still have to be done to make the user experience as smooth as possible, but simply being a competitor to YouTube is already quite powerful.
