SMR ? As in shingle magnetic recording ? 40 TB ? At those speeds you will never be able to fill such a disk.

HDDs are for colder storage that’s not yet cold enough for tape, but infrequently read and written. It takes more than a day to fill one.

I know. But SMRs are dog slow. I installed Win 10 on one 1TB Seagate SMR which came with an old laptop with the 1st generation Ryzen. Tranfer rate was about 150 kbs. It needed 5 minutes to start.

I know. But SMRs are dog slow. I installed Win 10 on one 1TB Seagate SMR which came with an old laptop with the 1st generation Ryzen. Tranfer rate was about 150 kbs. It needed 5 minutes to start.

They are not great for general purpose workloads - when you write to an SMR zone you need to rewrite the whole zone, a bit like flash, but much slower. Reads, however, behave just like a normal drive.

Writes are buffered into CMR zones and then moved to SMR when the firmware decides it’s time.
