Exactly what you are supposed to do to stop it, I am not sure. But just complete acceptance or even enthusiasm for warfare is not a safe or necessarily sane response.

I also think that part of this is that people latch on to simplified one-sided fairy tale explanations of conflicts.

You're being generous. 100 years is already after the Bolshevik coup and the civil war. No, this behavior started somewhen in imperial Russia. In late empire the paranoia that "the world is out to get us" was already present.

I’m guessing the scale of this isn’t as large as the article implies but I suppose we’ll see

It’s been sort of reassuring to see how absolutely minimal of an effect Russian hackers have had on Ukraine these past years

It's minimal at the macro scale but pretty significant at the micro scale.

It could certainly be worse. But the thing is, Russia has so many options for inflicting physical damage that the cyberattacks are relatively less important.
