They also have big plans for proper end to end encryption.

It's apparently specifically designed to facilitate large scale hosting with seamless configuration changes and the like. The story is that mailbox.org (Heinlein sister project) hit a lot of road blocks like that with their current system (BBB) and decided they have to build their own. They also have big plans for proper end to end encryption.
