Friends I’ve spoken to who live in Ukraine say the same thing, for what it’s worth. There seems to be a major disconnect between the recent alarm in the US/UK media and the actual residents of the place in question. Either these people are awfully naive or they recognize bluster when they see it.

Nobody in Poland believed Germany would attack, and even if they did Poland had great army and many allies!

This is not what I read from historians about Poland at that time. So what is your source for this affirmation?
However, the US policy of publicizing any alarming event is... well a policy, so it's difficult to know the actual current level of danger for Ukrainians.
And what Ukrainians feel is nothing more. As quite a few commentators said, nobody knows what Putin's plans are today. He certainly had a plan when creating this crisis. Today he maybe doesn't know what to do anymore.
Putin is a super clever guy but that doesn't mean he had planned all scenarios like a mastermind.
OTAN's very unified reaction and Biden threats may have forced Putin to reconsider.
Nobody knows what Putin will do.
