A great portion of Didion’s appeal and value is in her refusal to just spit it out like that. That’s what everyone does. Because that’s what everyone wants. It’s bad, actually.

I think there is merit to some of what you say, but I would like you to know, a very long time ago, I read something Didion wrote that blew my mind and had me thinking about it for weeks. I wish I could remember it now and blow your mind as well, but it's been about 15 years now and I can't recall exactly what it was. But I remember how it felt, and I knew at the time that Didion had tapped into something important, and she had taken me to a place that I had never been before. And I have to believe that means something.

I guess, but "no, you have to really think about it" is kind of a defense you can put forth about anything, so it's unsatisfying.
