Oddly enough, if I disable javascript and/or cookies, I get a completely blank white page instead. These tricks do work on a lot of other sites, though.
Just checked on my Windows 10 machine, and Brave, similarly configured (disabled javascript, same add-ons) also displays the New Yorker article - again, text only.

You can disable Scripts loaded from www.newyorker.com in uMatrix.
I'm not a zealot, but I like to browse with javascript default to blocked, and only if I notice a site not behaving correctly will I enable javascript. Side benefit is killing most begging-for-subscription overlays.
