Ask HN: Google salary increase outside perf?

I don't know about Google, but I have done this twice. In the first instance I had a competitive offer which my company matched, but the new company increased their offer so I left (27% increase over previous salary). In the second instance I used the competitive offer to get a 20% raise and I stayed at the company 2 more years and later got a promotion.
