Most folks would not bother with trying to understand the points this article is making when presented with the 'no change here' graph. HN readers are not 'most folks' so this type of data manipulation is obvious and wrong to many here.

I wouldn't say that - he's basically reverse engineered the graph that a climate change denier is already using for evidence and shown how it's basically cherry-picked BS.
Clearly the denialists are already well-versed with this particular approach.

Well, the ammo was already out there (last graph). The nice thing about this is that it's ammo for the rest of us (it explains that last graph and where it came from). This is one of the problems in debating people with counterfactual beliefs.
They'll start with false assumptions, but often everything after those assumptions are reasonably sound applications of logic and math. They may not even know what those assumptions are (as in the case of the flawed, final graph). They see a trend line that confirms their belief. The flawed assumption is that the data used to produce the trend line is itself sound and reasonable. Knowing where the data came from, why it's problematic, you can present counter evidence to their false beliefs.

#5This is a very nice blog post. Quite instructive. Recently, several times I’ve run into people tell me that temps in the U.S. are rising and I’ve wondered why they make such a claim. The blog sources the claim and overall the point I take from the blog post is that it’s easy to deceive people since people seek, by and large, confirmation of preconceived ideas rather than the truth.

There's both kinds. Those who refuse to believe the mean average temperature is going up have been declining in numbers as the evidence becomes more and more irrefutable. So they have been jumping to the "OK but we can't know for sure that it is human activity causing it!" camp.
There's also a third camp, which says "OK I get it, human activity is causing temperatures to rise, but we can't really do anything meaningful to slow it down, much less reverse it!"

It was the former and then the was overwhelming evidence. Then it was the latter... And now there's overwhelming evidence. So it's morphing into "it's too late there's nothing we can do!" Or it's not possible to organize etc. Still not helpful.
