this reminds me of a bit in an Adam Curtis documentary HyperNormalization. In the 80s someone created a “Carl Rogers” chat bot that would always respond with phrases like “how does that make you feel?”. It had far less smarts than SHRDLU (basically a glorified for loop) but people who used it said that they did feel better after interacting with it.

Hopefully it asks more intelligent questions when necessary but the idea is similar. It's just someone you can talk to and express your emotions to.
