Certainly the real theremin is conceptually simpler, though the availability of pre-packaged lidar chips removes a lot of the complexity.

This is a peak "the software is eating the world" design.
There are theremin designs will all levels of complexity, and the simpler ones look simpler than this one to me (just by virtue of consuming less power and thus being able to power from a simple battery). But well, I guess there are all kinds of adjustments that you can do digitally on the pi that wouldn't be practical on a protoboard.

Yes, but to be honest it became too hard to get this working the way I wanted it to.
Later on, once I finally have a real vacation, I plan on combing this with a few of my other projects to make something very easy to use. I consider myself to be a collector of other useful techniques.
For example, for my PiBluetoothMidSetup project all I did was make a manual process significantly easier( I also had to update some minor C bindings for compatibility with the latest Raspbian).
