You’re right, they COULD letterbox Nolan’s movie. They won’t. Nolan filmed in IMAX. It could just be reduced in size, as you suggested by letterboxing, for standard screens. But they won’t. To be fair, I expect audiences on average prefer fullscreen over letterboxing. Consider back when widescreen content was becoming common, but many people still had 4:3 displays - my experience was that people then generally defaulted to fullscreen 4:3 with widescreen content.
