I'm reminded of executioners. Nobody likes executioners, not even the people hiring them. But if you live in a society that needs lots of dirty work done, then you kind of need a guy like that around. Think of Luca Brasi from "The Godfather", for example. Despised but tolerated because he's useful.

Wow, not a bad idea, but I don't know how can it works. How I can federate it what is the usecase for it?

All the individual meetup or event sites using this software can connect to become a big eventbrite where events can be discovered more easily.

The reason Meetup worked was years of collecting contact info of people interested in specific topics and then blasting all of them when a new group started in a location. If 1% of people responded, that was still a decent turnout. This is the big barrier to entry for anyone trying to replicate Meetup. It was never about the event organizing software (which really wasn’t that great) it was about connecting your group…

My partner and a friend both ran pretty big meetups 10 years ago. What made it good was the discoverability. As organizers they had to pay for the group ($80) but group members got free usage. Organizers and some groups charged to recoup but not the norm. There were messgae board and stuff but basically just a reservation system.

Somewhere along the way wework bought them. It’s been spun off, but downhill since. A lot of group organizers passed the groups to others and some groups disappeared.

I’m still a member of a couple groups and meetup is really pushing members of groups to pay now (join meetup plus), and more adds to click through when you rsvp.

I guess that works in some cultures. I've organized a party for my kid and it was all hand-delivered invitations. I don't know half those parents' email addresses or phone numbers because that's not how we communicate. Sometimes I don't even know them at all have to ask around "Who's Johnny's mum?".

You should try out Lu.ma - it does all those things for free. I use it extensively for managing rsvps to both private and public events.

I just signed up to try it out, but I don't see either of these features: - ability to set each invitee as an adult, a child or an infant - ability to group invitees into families, so that any adult in the family can edit the RSVP for any/all family members

1. Custom ticket types. 2. Group tickets I guess is the best version of this? As in you can add +1s to your ticket. Otherwise this is not something they provide.

Right, so AFAICT there's nothing free which provides the features for which I pay punchbowl.
