It's motivated by the ideology of wanting a meritocracy - the idea that if you work hard you can reap rewards. Having some people in society that can sit at home and watch the S&P increase while some have to work 50-hour weeks to make ends meet is seen as problematic.

If its SFP then intel, they have seem to have good ability to go into power saving states. My mellanox cards don’t. 10gbase-t ethernet is harder to pick, a lot of those cards run incredibly hot particularly the ones that expect server style cooling. Heard bad things about all of them. Also heard that Windows has a hard time reaching 10G anyway.

It really shouldn't. Microsoft invented or popularized Receive Side Scaling [1], which helps get things lined up for high throughput; but applications probably need to do a bit of work too.

You can get pretty cheap 10GBASE-T NICs on ebay. I've had pretty good success with this abomination, a server-pull NIC with an HP proprietary physical interface plugged into an adapter to PCI-E: https://www.ebay.com/itm/144151881516

Silicom PEG210 Silicom PE210G2BPI40-T-SD-BC7 Intel x540 based bypass NIC. In case you want to have the two ports connect together when the computer is off or something. Setup time is a bit more, but you can also configure them to act like normal NICs.

Usually show up around $15-25 like other x540 dual rj45 cards, but sometimes a bit less, cause they're weird.

Why spend money on something so subjective? If you care about peripherals at all, a $13 basic keyboard is just as bad as a randomly chosen mechanical keyboard. Neither is likely to your taste :)

It's in Germany too, but recently it's become the norm for new-rich people to buy or rent these apartments and then sue the shop and especially bar owners for noise violations. Not allowing that kind of mixed usage in the first place completely cuts away all that crap.

My perspective on that one is broadly "screw 'em". If you buy property over a bar or restaurant that was there before you I don't think you should then be allowed to turn around and act surprised that there's a bar or restaurant downstairs.

The problem is, it's not that easy. In the end the law matters - it was just that no one cared for decades, even though the noise from the bars was far above the limits. The old occupants just paid shit in rent, the new ones pay through their nose and expect something for that amount.

Housing price issues in the US are fundamentally the result of every major city making it expensive or impossible to actually build enough housing. The kids' cat doors have latches so they can lock them.

The primary bedroom's cat door technically is lockable but I don't know why I'd ever lock it!

The lower-level bedroom's cat door doesn't have a lock, but you could easily put something heavy in front of the door to block it.

Fair, definitely depends on the cat(s). Our cats will frequently decide to start rough-housing on the bed at 3am, so unfortunately we have to keep them out of the bedroom at night lest our sleep quality suffers drastically. They also need to be kept out for "adult playtime", because otherwise they like to get involved and that isn't the vibe we're going for.
