Will "Retro art" do?

No. Lean into "pixel art". Hot take: "photo realistic" is just a style. If it doesn't exist and wasn't taken with a camera, then "photo realistic" is just the name of the style. Same with "pixel art", "water color", and everything else.

pixel art 2.0

still respects what it is but clearly differentiates itself as something new

This is an immensely cool thing that fits the space I imagine for AI within art. And I am not someone that likes framing AI output as art.

If you had instead drawn this, there would be charm and fun details EVERYWHERE. Little buildings you know would have inside jokes, there would be references snuck into everything. Who YOU are would come through, but it would also be much smaller.

This is HUGE, and the zoomed out view is actually an insanely useful map. It's so cool to see reality shifted into a style like this, and there's enough interesting things in "real new york" to make scrolling around this a fun thing to do. I have no impression of you here other than a vague idea you like the older sim city games BUT I have a really interesting impression of NYC.

IMO, that's two totally different pieces of art, with two totally different goals. Neither takes away from the other, since they're both making something impactful rather than one thing trying to simulate the impact of the other. Really nice job with this.

Author here, and to reiterate another reply - all of the critique of "pixel art" is completely fair. Aesthetically and philosophically, what AI does for "pixel art" is very off. And once you see the AI you can't really unsee it. But I didn't want to call it a "SimCity" map, though that's really the vibe/inspiration I wanted to capture, because that implies a lot of other things, so I used the term "pixel art" even th…

just FYI, there are some very obvious inaccuracies (stitching artefacts?) in this map, especially noticeable e.g. on Roosevelt Island around Roosevelt Bridge, or naround Pier 17 next to Brooklyn Bridge

There's a strange error where half the Broadway Junction subway station just... disappears. And seems to be replaced with some generically hallucinated city blocks? But that's the thing with AI, the quality control at scale is tough. I'm just happy this seems to be about 99.9+% accurate.

I don't know anything about electronic music or what a DAW is, but his usage of "dragging boxes around" could either be a gross reduction in the process of creating art, or it could genuinely be just mundane tasks. It's like if someone says my job as a SWE is just pressing keys, or looking at screens. I mean, technically that's true, and a lot of what I do daily can certainly be considered mundane. But from an outsid…

Just to provide a little more context, a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is, underneath all of the complexity and advanced features piled on top, a program which provides a visual timeline and a way to place notes on the timeline. The timeline is almost directly analogous to sheet music, except instead of displaying notes in a bespoke artificial language like sheet music does, they are displayed as boxes on the timel…

Thanks! That makes sense.

Low-res cel shading would be a better descriptor. It lends itself to looking like pixel art when zoomed out, but cel shading when zoomed in.

That'd be like calling photography "painting 2.0".

One day the majority of pixel art in the world, and indeed even photoreal photos, will be generated.

We'll call it pixel art even if the original motivation is gone.

To take it a step further it would be super cool to so rhiw figure out the roadway system from the map data and use the buildings as masks over the roads and have little simulated cars driving

100% - I originally wanted to do that but when I realized how much manual work I'd have to do just to get the tiles generated I had to cut back on scope pretty hard. I actually have a nice little water shader that renders waves on the water tiles via a "depth mask", but my fine-tunes for generating the shader mask weren't reliable enough and I'd spent far too much time on the project to justify going deeper. Maybe I'…

There's gotta be an easy way to just use the Google maps data to make a mask for the water?
