It seems we finally live in a world that there are credible alternatives to google. Spending a bit of time here - the smart people are on Brave and Kagi - but I've not seen a thread with a hacker news teardown of both. Which one do you use and why ?

First I use Brave only because I’m on $5 plan with Kagi and because a lot of searches are simple, like looking for website instead of accurately having to type in the name.
But when I really need to find something I use Kagi. If I could afford $9/10 plan I would just use Kagi.
If anybody knows how to set brave as default search in iOS - let me know.

There’s an extension called xSearch which will let you define any search engine as default.

I tried using it in the past but I remember it didn’t work out for me somehow for some reason. I just looked into it and figured out on my own. I used Modificator extension and wrote my own JS to pull search parameter and redirect to brave.
Edit: just tried xsearch. It worked and did pretty much the same thing i did with Modificator.

#5I prefer Kagi. Brave is OK, but I got better results from Kagi. And now that I have spent enough time fine-tuning which sites to prefer and (more importantly) which to downrate, my results are far better than anything else I've tried.
