Ask HN: Is Distribution King?

#1
As someone with a technical background, I am just now figuring out the importance of the other aspects of a business, such as distribution.

Used to feel that as long as you build a useful product the rest of it will figure itself out. That being said I feel like I'm just now realizing that idea is bullshit.

I believed it is.

Take Microsoft for example. They own the distribution channel to enterprises, government, and what not around the world. They can sell anything through that distribution channel.

It will take a lot of time, effort, and more time but try to own the distribution channel.

Unless you are dealing with Government or Enterprise, most software dont have distribution problem, especially those on the web where distribution is nearly free. You have a discovery problem. People dont know your product exist.

Curation is king, which in software means whoever will feature you (so, related to distribution for sure though not quite.) it's not enough to provide the option, many times you must drive the interest otherwise how will anyone know or why would they care?
