For years I've been using DDG and very rarely had to turn to Google for a better search result. Lately I'm having to !g to Google on many searches. And using "search_string" for exact matches seems to fail completely...

#3For the quotes bit: I found a source[1] saying to append a + to the beginning of the quotes for verbatim mode.
Example: +"stanford waits"
Aside from that, I can't offer any answers; only commiseration.

#4yeah. bing announced a long time ago they dropped support for things like exclusion (-)
it's mostly garbage now for complex queries. still use ddg tho.
