#3You need a server to federate your content with other instances. There are no "standalone" installations besides using the web client on your own machine (which I would not recommend).
There is not yet a good standalone ActivityPub client.

So this is why all the servers are written in stuff like PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, etc. The server and the client UI are the same thing. There is not yet a good standalone ActivityPub client.

The fediverse is not a push-pull system, if you aren't hosting your content then it doesn't exist. A standalone client would fail to serve your messages when you close it, defeating the point.
