Ask HN: Can you make 200k as a software engineer outside US?

Top level salaries I have seen in Switzerland/London are around 140K CHF or £120k as permanent or 650-700 per day as contractor. That is around 155k USD, which seem a fairly common salary in Bay Area/NYC while it would be a top salary in those 2 markets above. Also the big bonus/shares culture is not as prevalent in Europe.

Anyone here making more than that or knows anyone that does?

While you won't earn over 200k USD easily (unless at Google Zurich or very lucky) in Switzerland you can actually save a lot from your Software Engineer salary, if you go the frugal way (in SV half of your salary is easily eaten by taxes/rent/etc).

Here is a cost and savings breakdown for Zurich: https://swissdevjobs.ch/blog/how-to-find-job-as-software-dev...
