Which brings us back to the very first point made by kitcar. If you can make pizzas that taste better than Dominos and have a comparable price, then why aren't you a pizza company?

Now I understand. Anyone who is a good cook, should quit whatever job they have, unless they work in a restaurant as a cook, and start a restaurant.

Brilliant. I've been looking at VMWare ESXi as well as Microsoft's Virtualization. Microsoft's offerings aren't nearly as nice, but I'm a BizSpark member, so the licenses are free for me right now. And, you're able to migrate live servers from one box to the other, which is a huge plus.

Because disk IO on cloud hosting solutions generally suck. What I'm doing requires a lot of disk IO.

I have 2 servers in a closet at my house. I bought them about 4 years ago for 1000 each when I had money. Each has 2TB of storage. one I use as my server, one I use for personal backup. Since I already have Internet service at my house, so running a server costs me only the electricity to run it. Having the machines in my physical possession has been a valuable learning experience. I'm not running anything critical yet, but I haven't had much downtime.

Right now I don't think I could afford to pay for managed hosting, but I have to pay my electric bill right?

I have been pleased with the results so far, especially as what I have been working on involves moving many large files around on my internal network, storing and retrieving them with the system I am building. it is useful to me to test what I am doing without needing to go outside my network.

That given, when I get the system in a state to go live I know I will need to work up to hundreds of servers to handle the scale of the thing. When that happens I will use whatever is best for that situation, most likely many distributed dedicated machines, but for now what I have works.
