I could access Google Reader from any device with a web browser. Thunderbird requires that I have an application installed on the device.
Thunderbird also cannot magically backfill a new subscription. Google Reader could, because pretty much guaranteed, someone else was subscribed already so Google had the history.

I quite miss webOS and my Palm Pre. The swipe area off screen was a great way to interact with the UI without reaching up to the touchscreen. There was a lot to like about webOS in general too. It's too bad they came to market so late and sold to HP.
