Are you really surprised people feel this way? People have pigeonholed themselves into this field and now they find themselves horseshoe makers in this new age. It is scary and concerning. People do have legitimate fear. The whole pitch with AI isn't really that it empowers you to make some CRUD app easily. It is that eventually, sometime very soon, people will wise up to the fact that prompting is not a six figure j…

> at prompting is not a six figure job. It can be done by desperate low skilled people halfway across the world. Eventually those people will also hit the block.

And people will rightfully respond that we ‘will’ need people who understand architecture and such: almost certainly more than a handful.

The bigger problem is that right now we have a lot of developers. Even if this had the comparatively mild overall impact of increasing developer productivity by 25%, that’s going to mean the industry needs somewhere around 25% fewer people. And it’s not like the people who lose their jobs are going to pick their stuff up and join the circus… they’re going to fight tooth and nail for the jobs that are available, plummeting supply. Even if development with LLMs remains a highly skilled job, we probably currently have all the software developers we’ll need for decades. This is exactly what happened to toolmakers, pattern makers, and all sorts of other highly skilled manufacturing disciplines during the off-shoring craze.

People in the software business have been so coddled for so long, they’ve started to believe that they demand high salaries because of their incredible genius, rather than a labor shortage in the field. It’s going to be a pretty huge shock for a whole lot of people to suddenly be on the same playing field as everybody else.

Most people in the real work are pretty nervous about AI as well.

This isn't a HN specific thing.

Most people think AI represents a threat to many good things.

I can't say that they're saying either. There are undoubtedly many ways that this doesn't end well.

I think it's pretty natural to be defensive when it feels like your way of life is being threatened.

Ah yes, The Country.

Fair point. I looked it up and I didn't realize that possibly only around 40-50% of HN traffic is from the US https://marcotm.com/articles/stats-of-being-on-the-hacker-ne... I do wonder what similar polling/surveys would find in other countries

Most posts are fairly US centric so I don't think it's odd to assume it's mostly Americans who visit.

A lot of us are pro AI, but the anti-AI crowd yells louder and frankly it doesn’t seem worth it arguing with them about it. In the end, they were either right (AI isn’t the way and developer jobs are still mostly the same), unemployed (AI was the way and everyone who didn’t adopt got obsoleted), or both (AI is the way, and everyone got obsoleted because it was just much better/dangerous than expected).

> At some point, execution speed starts to matter more than the elegance of the code.

If this were true, shouldn’t most of the software we use be adding new features and fixing bugs at a faster rate, while becoming more stable?

Do you feel like that is happening? Do you have an example of an app (besides claude code or cursor etc) that you use that has seemed to improve more rapidly since the advent of agentic coding?

I have made very falsifiable statement.

You're absolutely right! So does AI most times.

Sadly this isn't even the only comment equating LLM skepticism to racism, even more sadly I'm not even remotely surprised that there's HN commenters that think this way

It depends on what you mean by skeptisism. Skeptisism about homeopathy is a different class of beast to climate change skepticism. I am absolutely not saying that all arguments on the limitations of LLMs are bigotry. I just noticed that some of the participants adopt the attitudes, and behaviours that mirror bigotry. I haven't felt the need to construct a lexicon of derisive terminology to discuss this topic. That do…

Companies and technologies are not people. They are not analogous.

100% this. Disrupting and killing the jobs of others is good. Now that we are killing our own jobs, disruption is not so good anymore.

100%? So everybody who has any negative opinion of or experience with AI is now a "tech bro" who believes killing jobs is good? That's hideous. Why even have an HN account if you harbor this kind of black-and-white hate against people in software? You shouldn't want HN to look like the rest of the internet (flame wars, petty back-and-forth rhetoric, immaturity, etc).

I don't have a hate against people in software. I am one of them. I just find it hypocritical to throw a fit now that AI has the potential to kill a lot of our own jobs. But we happily created tools that cost a lot of other people's jobs.

In the end the real problem isn't AI but the way our economic system is set up. For a while it was accepted and worked to some degree that society should be structured to allow capitalists gain maximum profit and then use that money to hire people. AI and robotics will probably break this and we will either have a permanent underclass or we will have to think about a society where all citizens gain from technological progress.

You can't hold up technological progress. If once country doesn't do it, another will.
