That's also my experience, the AI is very helpful for doing common things with languages you're not great at. Makes it easier to pick up a few extra tools to use now and then.

I can totally understand it! I would loved to have access to a LLM back in time. Especially since I started to learn just after the era but we didn't have "flex" yet. It was true garbage... Now I mostly JSX / tailwind, which is way faster than prompting, but surely because I'm fluent in that thing.

Not saying that is not true, but did you measure that actually or is it a feeling or you didn't spend very much time on getting a prompt you can plop your requests in? jsx and tailwind are very verbose ; frontend is mostly very verbose, and, unless you are building LoB apps, you will have to try things a few times. Cerebras and groq with a predefined copy paste prompt will generate all that miserable useless slob (yes, I vehemently hate frontend work; I do hope it will be replaced very soon by llms completely; it's close but not quite there yet) in milliseconds so you can just tweak it a bit. I am fluent at building web frontends since the mid 90s; before I did DOS, windows and motif ones (which was vastly nicer; there you could actually write terse frontend code); I see many companies inside and I have not seen anyone faster at frontend than current llms, so I would like to see a demo. In logic I see many people faster as the llm can often simply not even figure it out even remotely.

Careers are future-proofed through relationships and opportunities, not skills. Skills are just the buy-in.

Getting and nailing a good opportunity opens doors for a fair bit, but that's rare.

So the vast, vast majority of future-proofing is relationship-building - in tech, with people who don't build relationships per se.

And realize that decision-makers are business people (yes, even the product leads and tech leads are making business decisions). Deciders can control their destiny, but they're often more exposed to business vicissitudes. There be dragons - also gold.

To me, the main risk of LLM's is not that they'll take over my coding, but that they'll take over the socialization/community of developers - sharing neat tricks and solutions - that builds tech relationship. People will stop writing hard OS software blogs and giving presentations after LLM's inter-mediate to copy code and offer solutions. Teams will become hub-and-spoke, with leads enforcing architecture and devs talking mostly to their copilots. That means we won't be able to find like-minded people, no one has any incentive or even occasion to share knowledge. My guess is that relationship skills will be even more valued, but perhaps also a bit fruitless.

Doctors and lawyers and even business people have a professional identity from their schooling, certification, and shared history. Developers and hackers don't; you're only as relevant as your skills on point. So there's a bit of complaining but no structured resistance on the part of developers to their work being factored, outsourced, and now mediated by LLM's (that they're busily building).

Developers have always lived in the shadow of the systems they're building. You used to have to pay good money for compilers and tools, licenses to APIs, etc. All the big guys realized that by giving away that knowledge and those tools, they make the overall cost cheaper, and they can capture more. We've been free-riding for 30 years, and it's led us to believe that skills matter most. LLM's are a promising way to sell cloud services and expensive hardware, so there will be even more willingness than crypto or car-sharing or real estate or whatever to invest in anything disruptive. We rode the tide in, and it will take us out again.

To replace all developers, we need AGI yes. To replace many developers? No. If one developer can do the same work as 5 could previously, unless the amount of work expands then 4 developers are going to be looking for a job. Therefore, unless you for some reason believe you will be in the shrinking portion that cannot be replaced I think the question deserves more attention than “nothing”.

Frameworks, compilers, and countless other developments in computing massively expanded the efficiency of programmers and that only expanded the field. Short of genuine AGI I’ve yet to see a compelling argument why productivity eliminates jobs, when the opposite has been true in every modern economy.

How would those have plausibly eliminated jobs? Neither frameworks nor compilers were the totality of the tasks a single person previously was assigned. If there was a person whose job it was to convert C code to assembly by hand, yes, a compiler would have eliminated most of those jobs.

If you need an example of automation eliminating jobs, look at automated switchboard operators. The job of human switchboard operator (mostly women btw) was eliminated in a matter of years.

Except here, instead of a low-paid industry we are talking about a relatively high-paid one, so the returns would be much higher.

A good analogy can be made to outsourcing for manufacturing. For a long time Chinese products were universally of worse quality. Then they caught up. Now, in many advanced manufacturing sectors the Chinese are unmatched. It was only hubris that drove arguments that Chinese manufacturing could never match America’s.

"Other people were wrong about something else so that invalidates your argument" Why are half the replies like this?

Because what is shared is overconfidence in the face of a system that has humble beginnings but many people trying to improve it. People have a natural bias against massive changes, and assume the status quo is fixed.

I’m open to all possibilities. There might be a near term blocker to improvement. There might be an impending architectural change that achieves AGI. Strong opinions for one or the other with no extremely robust proof are a mistake.

Personally I hope it will take a lot of eng work, especially the menial work.

If it could also help management understand their own issues and how to integrate solutions into their software, then it would be great!

The core here is, that if engineering is going, then law is going, marketing is going and a lot of other professions are also going.

This means that we have structural issues we need to solve then.

And in that case it is about something else than my own employability.

This is no different from creating a to-do app with an LLM and proclaiming all developers are up for replacement. Demos are not what makes LLMs good, let alone useful.

In other words, you have built exactly zero commercial-grade applications that us the working programmers work on building every day. LLMs are good for playing with stuff, yes, and that has been implied by your parent commenter as well I think. Interestingly I do not find that the stuff you mentioned are the things that LLLMs are bad at. It can generate easy to read code. It can document its code extensively. It can write tests. It can use dependency injection especially if you ask it to. What I noticed where I am currently am much better than an LLM is that I can still have a very nuanced very complicated problem space in my head and create a solution based on that. The LLM currently cannot solve a problem which is so nuanced and complicated that even I cannot fully describe and work partially from insincts. It is the 'engineering taste' or 'engineering instincts' and our ability to absorb complicated nuanced design problems in our head that separates experienced developers from LLMs.

Unless LLMs get significantly better and just replace humans in every task, I predict that LLMs effect on industry will be that much less developers will be needed but those who will be needed will be relatively 'well paid' as it will be harder to become a professional software developer. (more experience and engineering talent will be needed to work professionally).

It’s my belief that humanity has an effectively infinite capacity for software and code. We can always recursively explore deeper complexity.

As we are able to automate more and more of the creation process, we may be able to create an infinite amount of software. However, what sustains high wages for our industry is a constrained supply of people with an ability to create good software.

I started diversifying this year for this very reason. Firstly I’ve been engineering for over a decade and purposefully avoiding leadership roles, so I’ve stepped into a head of engineering role. Secondly I’ve taken up a specific wood working niche, it will provide me with a side hustle to begin with and help diversify our income.

I don’t think LLMs are taking jobs today, but I now clearly see a principal that has fully emerged, non tech people now have a lust for achieving and deploying various technology solutions, and the tech sector will fulfill it in the next decade.

Get ahead early.
